This pipe style is commonly known as a four winds style pipe. The origin of the 4 winds pipe is fairly recent, being around for only a couple hundred years. The rings of the Four Winds pipe represents the four directions and may have been originally used as decorations to represent something like the four cardinal directions. These marks are carved around the bowl they are put there to remind the user to honor the 4 directions when loading and smoking the pipe. Today folks continue this honoring and have rings carved on the shank (back where the stem is inserted) or the bowl (the piece where the tobacco is put) of the pipe.
