This pipe is beautifully inlaid by Butch Taylor Dakota Sioux. He was a true artist and could inlay anything. The pipe stem is made of ash and is decorated in the old Dakota style with mallard duck feathers, quillwork, ribbon and brads.

This is a unique pipe there have only been 4 made by the artist Butch Taylor who passed away a couple years ago. One pipe is in the Pipestone National Monuments museum, the second was made for Paul Gobal the author of children's books, this is the third one, and the fourth one was made just a year before he died and is now owned by a friend and member of the Keepers.
Our tribal people discovered may uses for the lead balls that the Europeans shot from there guns this was likely the most artistic. Pipestone was a rare material which you had to travel hundreds or thousands of miles by foot or by horse to just get the stone. What would you do if your pipe broke? Some people say that a broken pipe should be buried. But old pipes have found which were obviously been repaired by various methods the most common of that inlay. Today inlay as become a vanishing art with only a few people knowing how.
