The abalone shell is traditionally used for smudging which is said to clear out negativity from a space. The abalone shell was also initially used in trade as a form of currency. If the abalone shell is used to smudge, a small amount of dirt or sand can be added to the bottom of the shell to ensure that the shell is cared for and doesn't get burned through.
